Video Premiere: Commoner – “Parting Gift”

Tucson, AZ, alt rockers Commoner recently signed to New Morality Zine, and earlier this year they released their Change of Heart EP. Loan, talking about their Winter Promo, described Commoner as “embrac[ing] early 2000s alternative metal” to channel “bands like Oversize, Ritual, or Wayside.” I couldn’t have said it better.
Change of Heart is a little less outwardly heavy than Winter Promo, a bit catchier, and at times there are hints of early 2010s Tumblr-core bands like Basement (complimentary). That’s certainly true of “Parting Gift,” the closer and highlight of Change of Heart. The band points specifically to Movements and Citizen as influences on the EP; the way those bands balance aggression, atmosphere, and hooks clearly left a mark on “Parting Gift.”
